RW18 cover 500The Spring/Summer 2010 Issue of real weddings Magazine is now available on newsstands, through The Bay, Home Outfitters and Sears bridal registries, and  through participating bridal vendors. This issue features eight real wedding stories, all with a local connection and local vendors. Our fashion spread, “Into the Day Softly” features the soft and flowing with pleating and fine detailing; it’s all about textures and intricate embellishment this season.

The groom also gets a bit of inspiration with our blue hue combinations in our groom style spread, “Harmony in Blue.” If blue is the central colour in your palette, whether it be a bright highlighter hue or a serious steel blue, pair it with another colour for personality and a cohesive look.

Of course, food is always a key element of the wedding day and caterers Culinary Capers, cake designer April Bellia, and food stylist Murray Bancroft team up with photographer Bruce Law to present a tantalizing wedding day menu of locally available fare and distinct West Coast flavours.

This issue also marks the introduction of our realadvice column, a feature that tackles serious marriage topics from a professional’s standpoint. In the Spring/Summer 2010 issue, we unfold the delicate subject of prenuptial agreements.

Our Honeymoons and Travel editor, Lauren Kramer, presents two honeymoon destinations. The Hague in the Netherlands for a distinctly european experience. For a stay-cation, the vibrant village of Whistler is a mere two hours from Vancouver.

Enjoy our new issue, chock-full of inspiring stories and ideas, practical information and advice, all with a local BC perspective!

The Call for Photo Submissions for real wedding stories is now open for our Fall/Winter 2010 Issue. Professional, BC-based photographers are invited to submit weddings they have shot since July 2009 for consideration as a feature wedding for our 19th Issue. (We do not receive submissions through couples or other vendors. Please talk to your photographer if you are interested in having your wedding submitted.)

New Submission and Usage Fees

This issue, we are introducing a submission processing fee and usage payment for submitted and published images. The editorial time involved in reviewing legal releases, images and selecting weddings has become significant.  The process also requires advanced file handling capabilities to receive, handle and store image files. A submission fee of $49 for the first wedding and $29 for each additional submission per photographer or studio will now be charged at the time of submission. This fee can be paid by either the photographer or the bridal couple and will allow us to devote more editorial resources to process images, provide better service & enhance the online submission process.  For those photographers seeking an editorial opinion of their work by our editorial selection team a written Editorial Opinion is available on request for $69.00. Requests for Editorial Opinions must be received at the time of submission.

To balance the cost of submissions, Media Hill Publications will now pay for images used. A Usage Fee of $400 for every wedding selected to run in print (including online rights) as a Feature Wedding; a $300 fee will be paid for every image used as a Cover; $90 for any group of 6 images or less used for Editorial Purposes in print; a $49 usage fee will be paid for 10 or less images used to run only on the web in one of our blogs or on our site at the Real Weddings website. More details can be found in our updated Submissions Package. You can also opt-in to allow Media Hill to Broker images on your behalf for other Commercial, Stock or Advertising purposes.

New Newsletter

In order to start the submission process, photographers will need to subscribe to our new Photographer’s Newsletter. You can do so through this link.

Roger Mahler and Holly Truchan of Union Photographers share their top tips on finding the right photographer for your wedding day.

Tip 1: “Click” with Your Photographer
It’s important to have a good rapport with your photographer so you feel natural, comfortable and at ease with communicating with them and having them around on the big day. Wedding photography involves constant interaction between the wedding couple, bridal party, guests and the photographer, so it is in your best interest to choose a photographer whose personality is compatible with yours.

Your potential wedding photographer’s working style should also meet your expectations. Are they flexible to go with the flow of the day? How will they dress on the wedding day? Do they work quickly or slowly but methodically? How unobtrusive are they? How are they with children?

Tip 2: Ask to See Complete Wedding Albums
You’ve found a photographer whose style speaks to you but can he or she capture the entire wedding day with consistently beautiful images? When you meet with a prospective photographer, ask to see several of their complete wedding albums so you get an idea of how they capture the entire story of a couple’s wedding day, from start to finish. If a photographer only shows you a few pictures of a particular wedding you won’t be able to get a feel for their work in different situations and types of shots.

Tip 3: Make Sure the Photographer you Contracted is the Same One Who Will be Shooting at Your Wedding
Some wedding photography studios have several photographers working for them or a principal and secondary photographers. You do not want to be surprised on your wedding day by a photographer arriving that you didn’t expect or know. Be sure you view samples of work from the photographer assigned to your wedding.

Tip 4: Consider How Long You Would Like the Photographer to Stay and for What Events
The length of coverage for the day is really up to you and the schedule of the ceremonies and events of the day. We usually find a minimum of eight hours is needed in order to fully cover and tell the story of your wedding in a natural, relaxed way.

Tip 5: Consider Doing Engagement Photos With Your Wedding Photographer
Engagement photos with your chosen wedding day photographer are not necessary but can be important practice for working with your photographer. For us, engagement photo sessions are a great way to get to know our clients better, which in the end, can make the wedding day photographing that much more relaxed and fun.

If you have not received an email Invitation to Submit but would like to be added to our list, please contact our office: 604-291-1575 or email our Executive Assistant, Lara Jane Nowlan: larajane@mediahill.com for more information.
