Roger Mahler and Holly Truchan of Union Photographers share their top tips on finding the right photographer for your wedding day.
Tip 1: “Click” with Your Photographer
It’s important to have a good rapport with your photographer so you feel natural, comfortable and at ease with communicating with them and having them around on the big day. Wedding photography involves constant interaction between the wedding couple, bridal party, guests and the photographer, so it is in your best interest to choose a photographer whose personality is compatible with yours.
Your potential wedding photographer’s working style should also meet your expectations. Are they flexible to go with the flow of the day? How will they dress on the wedding day? Do they work quickly or slowly but methodically? How unobtrusive are they? How are they with children?
Tip 2: Ask to See Complete Wedding Albums
You’ve found a photographer whose style speaks to you but can he or she capture the entire wedding day with consistently beautiful images? When you meet with a prospective photographer, ask to see several of their complete wedding albums so you get an idea of how they capture the entire story of a couple’s wedding day, from start to finish. If a photographer only shows you a few pictures of a particular wedding you won’t be able to get a feel for their work in different situations and types of shots.
Tip 3: Make Sure the Photographer you Contracted is the Same One Who Will be Shooting at Your Wedding
Some wedding photography studios have several photographers working for them or a principal and secondary photographers. You do not want to be surprised on your wedding day by a photographer arriving that you didn’t expect or know. Be sure you view samples of work from the photographer assigned to your wedding.
Tip 4: Consider How Long You Would Like the Photographer to Stay and for What Events
The length of coverage for the day is really up to you and the schedule of the ceremonies and events of the day. We usually find a minimum of eight hours is needed in order to fully cover and tell the story of your wedding in a natural, relaxed way.
Tip 5: Consider Doing Engagement Photos With Your Wedding Photographer
Engagement photos with your chosen wedding day photographer are not necessary but can be important practice for working with your photographer. For us, engagement photo sessions are a great way to get to know our clients better, which in the end, can make the wedding day photographing that much more relaxed and fun.
