trash the dress jamie delaine3

For their engagement photos, Michelle and Mitch wanted something a little out of the ordinary. “I wanted something spicier and more memorable than the usual engagement shoot.  Something that would take us out of our comfort zones, that would make us look back in 30 years and say, ‘that was crazy!’” explains Michelle. They chose to do a “Trash the Dress” session with photographer Jamie Delaine, in which the bride wears a wedding gown but allows it to get wet, dirty, torn, etc. Some brides actually “trash” their dress after it has been worn on the wedding day as a cheeky defiance against the tradition of keeping the dress pristine, tucked away in a box somewhere. For Michelle, the dress wasn’t the one she wore on her wedding day but one she found at a vintage store, “It was a match made in heaven though, as it fit with minimal alteration and was exactly the style I wanted,  simple and elegant.”

Their photo shoot took place in Vancouver’s Chinatown and, seen in the photos above, at Finn Slough in Richmond, the latter chosen because it had a unique and isolated feel. Though the water was quite cold, the couple loved the spontaneity of their shoot and in the end the shockingly cold water and dirty mud lent the gritty, natural, and fun experience they were looking for.

jamiedelaine2Photographer Jamie Delaine is in love with life: laughing until her stomach hurts, drinking green tea, rainy Vancouver days, cardigan sweaters, and learning to love selflessly. She is constantly dreaming and seeking out new ways to express her creativity and nothing excites her more than meeting couples that are uniquely and truly themselves. Collaborating with her clients, Jamie creates photographs that are authentic and real, overflowing with laughter and life.

gucio tricia chris openrTricia wanted their wedding to be, of course, pretty, but mostly both she and Chris just wanted the day to be relaxed and fun. “We aren’t much for the spotlight, so keeping things pretty natural and informal felt right,” Tricia says of their celebration at London Heritage Farm in Richmond. “The farm was great because we didn’t have to worry about decorating anything!”

Their DIY affair involved many of their family and friends. Guests assembled and helped set up, ceremony music was provided by the bride’s brother Ian who is a music student at UVic, bridesmaid and graphic designer Samantha Langdorf designed their stationery, and everyone enjoyed an assortment of baked goods, personally made by Tricia’s Aunt Rosie, owner of Butter Bakery in Kerrisdale.

seaside-chicShendah and Jeff’s Sunshine Coast locale and seaside theme was inspired by the couple’s many fond memories of visits past to Shendah’s family cabin in nearby Porpoise Bay. “We wanted seaside charm without being too cliche or kitschy… we took our inspiration from natural elements, like the blue of the sea and green moss.” says Shendah. From the fresh blues and greens of the bridesmaids’ dresses, to the curly willow and white flower arrangements, to the personalized aqua candle holders, Shendah and Jeff’s celebration was truly seaside chic.

Roger Mahler and Holly Truchan of Union Photographers share their top tips on finding the right photographer for your wedding day.

Tip 1: “Click” with Your Photographer
It’s important to have a good rapport with your photographer so you feel natural, comfortable and at ease with communicating with them and having them around on the big day. Wedding photography involves constant interaction between the wedding couple, bridal party, guests and the photographer, so it is in your best interest to choose a photographer whose personality is compatible with yours.

Your potential wedding photographer’s working style should also meet your expectations. Are they flexible to go with the flow of the day? How will they dress on the wedding day? Do they work quickly or slowly but methodically? How unobtrusive are they? How are they with children?

Tip 2: Ask to See Complete Wedding Albums
You’ve found a photographer whose style speaks to you but can he or she capture the entire wedding day with consistently beautiful images? When you meet with a prospective photographer, ask to see several of their complete wedding albums so you get an idea of how they capture the entire story of a couple’s wedding day, from start to finish. If a photographer only shows you a few pictures of a particular wedding you won’t be able to get a feel for their work in different situations and types of shots.

Tip 3: Make Sure the Photographer you Contracted is the Same One Who Will be Shooting at Your Wedding
Some wedding photography studios have several photographers working for them or a principal and secondary photographers. You do not want to be surprised on your wedding day by a photographer arriving that you didn’t expect or know. Be sure you view samples of work from the photographer assigned to your wedding.

Tip 4: Consider How Long You Would Like the Photographer to Stay and for What Events
The length of coverage for the day is really up to you and the schedule of the ceremonies and events of the day. We usually find a minimum of eight hours is needed in order to fully cover and tell the story of your wedding in a natural, relaxed way.

Tip 5: Consider Doing Engagement Photos With Your Wedding Photographer
Engagement photos with your chosen wedding day photographer are not necessary but can be important practice for working with your photographer. For us, engagement photo sessions are a great way to get to know our clients better, which in the end, can make the wedding day photographing that much more relaxed and fun.
