Semiahmoo_facadeRecently, Semiahmoo Resort & Spa in Blaine, Washington held a Bridal Soiree showcasing the Resort itself as well as select decorators, florists and wedding industry creatives from the surrounding area.

semiahmooterraceThe Resort has several ceremony and reception venue options. Pictured above is the terrace area that is popular for outdoor ceremonies and offers a picturesque view of Semiahmoo Bay with White Rock in the distance.

in_bloom bouquetJust off the main lobby and adjacent to the ceremony terrace is The Seaview Lobby. In this room, string trio Sunrise Strings serenaded guests while florist Kate Fadden of In Bloom Designs and stationery designer Kerri Efendi showcased their work. Fadden presented a seaside and garden theme, incorporating sand and starfish with blooms in fresh white and green.

efendi inviteEfendi’s stationery was inventive and detailed. She designed the media invitations to the event (shown here) and we were especially impressed with her design that housed invitations inside hollowed-out old books about love. It seems her background in landscape architecture influences her three dimensional designs and allows her to push the boundaries of traditional wedding invitations.

blush custom floral table2The larger Victoria Room was decorated with pretty lavender tablescapes, a collaboration between Blaine florist Stacie Sutcliff of Blush Custom Floral and wedding stylist Hollie Anthonysz of Soiree Memorable Events.

soiree+blush detailsSutcliff has a distinct style which is unstructured, natural, romantic and garden-like. Three different arrangements graced the tables resulting in a look that was cohesive but not uniform. This variety in centrepieces is a great way to create visual interest and rhythm to your overall wedding decor. The centrepieces sat amidst lavender and silver textiles, glass charger plates and gold coloured chiavari chairs for an overall look of graceful simplicity.

moore_tabledetails2For an open-air reception, the Resort’s tented outdoor reception space is a lovely venue for a casual to semi-formal summer wedding and offers scenic views of the Bay. The adjoining boardwalk area could be set up for a cocktail hour before moving the guests under the tent for dinner. For the Soiree, the tented space was beautifully decorated by designer Steven Moore. Moore has been featured in magazines such as Martha Stewart Weddings and Seattle Bride.

There was also a candy bar with large glass vases full of colour coordinated candies set atop an old leather trunk. The reception area also had a dance floor and during the event, Chris Graves of Your Song Entertainment provided music.

The Semiahmoo Resort also offers a separate location just a few minutes away. The tudor-style Loomis Trail Mansion sits on the Loomis Trail Golf Course and is a sumptuous locale for a grand celebration. The lobby showcases a grand staircase that leads into the dining area. Guests could mingle over cocktails in the lobby before heading upstairs for dinner.

Trish Manley of A New Leaf Flower Shoppe provided luscious and exotic florals that complemented the stately elegance of the venue.

Various outdoor locations around the building offer different ceremony settings that overlook the golf course. The Mansion also offers 15 guest rooms for yourself or your out-of-town guests.

After the Soiree, the tented reception area at the Resort became the setting for an intimate industry dinner. The Soiree’s vendors, as well as wedding industry creatives and media from Blaine, Seattle and Vancouver, were treated to a formal dinner complete with wine pairings from local vineyards. It was a wonderful way to end the day, catching up with wedding industry friends and meeting new ones from our little corner of the Pacific Westcoast.

Vancouver’s wedding industry is filled with top-notch, highly creative, on-trend professionals of which planners and decorators CountDown Events is one. We recently asked them what says, “Westcoast Chic” for weddings.

Vancouver and the Westcoast definitely have a specific culture and personality, quite distinct from any other major city in Canada. What are some of these qualities that lend inspiration to the planning, design, and decor of a truly Westcoast wedding?
Vancouverites are certainly a distinct set of people. We are fortunate enough to have some of the country’s most amazing natural backdrops in and around our city and many couples love and want to incorporate the outdoors into their wedding day. Nature is a huge inspiration when designing a West Coast wedding! Vancouver also has a cultural potpourri unlike that in any of the other major cities around the country. Couples are often a blend of two people from different cultural backgrounds, they each cherish the unique elements of their traditions and want to showcase those elements in their wedding. Merging cultures, the outdoors and Vancouverites’ passion for style is truly what makes a wedding “Westcoast”.

Venue and location are key aspects of the big day. In your experience, which places embody that Westcoast feel?
We are so blessed in Vancouver to have the Pacific Ocean at our doorstep, and to be bordered by the mountains and woodlands. Those things, the splendour of the outdoors surrounding us, are the main influence in venue choices for couples seeking a bona fide Westcoast wedding. There are so many stunning venues around the city but the ones that embody the essence of “Westcoast feel” are those that present the use of outdoor space, such as Van Dusen Gardens, Hycroft Manor, Capilano Golf & Country Club, Cecil Green and Brock House. All examples of venues that allow a wedding to incorporate Vancouver’s love affair with nature. At the Capilano Golf & Country Club for example, a couple may have their photos taken under the regal Catalpa tree while their guests, seated inside the clubhouse for dinner, can view the magnificently green fairway and the shimmering city through the large windows and off the patio.

Another setting that is authentic to the Westcoast wedding is backyard space. For some couples, a backyard wedding at first thought may seem too casual for their tastes, but the laid-back yet elegant ambiance that can be created in the backyard environment is ideally suited to the warm hospitality that is so particular to the Westcoast.

Since Vancouver is known for it’s eco-consciousness, what are some elements you would suggest to incorporate “green” into a wedding?
As we can well attest, going “green” for your wedding does not mean compromising beauty or elegance. From invitations printed on recycled papers to wedding dresses made from sustainable–and totally luxurious–fabrics, there are so many ways to make a wedding eco-chic! Having a menu composed of local, wild and organic ingredients is an easy way to have exactly what you want on your special day, while staying true to your “green” side. With a little creativity, every facet of a wedding can be eco-conscious without sacrificing a couple’s style statement.

CountDown Events is a Vancouver event-planning company led by Soha Lavin. Many of their beautiful, lavish, detailed and elegant weddings have been featured in real weddings magazine. They are also the creators of Creme de la Creme, an exclusive wedding show experience consisting of invitation-only vendors and showcasing the best our city has to offer.

gucio tricia chris openrTricia wanted their wedding to be, of course, pretty, but mostly both she and Chris just wanted the day to be relaxed and fun. “We aren’t much for the spotlight, so keeping things pretty natural and informal felt right,” Tricia says of their celebration at London Heritage Farm in Richmond. “The farm was great because we didn’t have to worry about decorating anything!”

Their DIY affair involved many of their family and friends. Guests assembled and helped set up, ceremony music was provided by the bride’s brother Ian who is a music student at UVic, bridesmaid and graphic designer Samantha Langdorf designed their stationery, and everyone enjoyed an assortment of baked goods, personally made by Tricia’s Aunt Rosie, owner of Butter Bakery in Kerrisdale.

seaside-chicShendah and Jeff’s Sunshine Coast locale and seaside theme was inspired by the couple’s many fond memories of visits past to Shendah’s family cabin in nearby Porpoise Bay. “We wanted seaside charm without being too cliche or kitschy… we took our inspiration from natural elements, like the blue of the sea and green moss.” says Shendah. From the fresh blues and greens of the bridesmaids’ dresses, to the curly willow and white flower arrangements, to the personalized aqua candle holders, Shendah and Jeff’s celebration was truly seaside chic.
