eurowave 1All the stress and busyness of planning your wedding sometimes leads to changes in diet and exercise habits. All of a sudden you don’t have time to eat as well as you usually do or go to the gym as often as before. If you’ve gained unwanted pounds and are afraid you won’t fit into your dress in a few months, sessions with Body Beautiful Canada’s Eurowave spa treatment may help trim and shape your figure without hours at the gym. The Eurowave uses an Electric Muscle Stimulation technology of the Professional type (the other two types are for personal use at a low voltage, and for medical use). It specifically uses 400 HZ and 600 Hz pulsating faradic waves that penetrate deep into the muscles to tone, shape, and tighten and actually builds new muscle mass in the targeted area. The Eurowave can be used anywhere you want inch loss, most often used on the butt, tummy, thighs and arms. Each session is only 18 minutes and toning and inch loss can result from just one session. EMS uses muscle memory, so once your muscles have been tightened, rebuilt and reshaped, they continue to stay that way for a significant amount of time after completing the appropriate amount of sessions.

eurowaveCurious about this process, I tried this out myself at a spa in Yaletown. (Yes, the above picture makes it look a bit scary but it’s not! And no, that is not actually a photo of me but it was the same set up.) Tori Holmes, trained therapist of the Eurowave, took me through the process. Lying back on a spa bed, in a quiet, calmingly lit room, Tori first measured my midsection, noting my inches. She then placed several conductors in little pouches attached to three straps around my midsection. Being a petite person, I wasn’t sure inch loss would be possible in just 18 minutes. And admittedly, the idea of sending electric waves into my body made me a bit nervous. As I lay there, I felt an s-type wave working my muscles very gently from the sides. It felt like tiny fingers drumming on by abdomen, not painful at all and actually quite relaxing. By the end of the 18 minutes, Tori measured me again and I had actually lost about three inches – an inch around each area the straps were placed. Although I didn’t walk out of the session with a six-pack, I did feel like my tummy was tighter and that I had better posture. Tori informed me that my 18 minutes session would last about five days.

The Eurowave has a special package of 10 sessions for brides, called Bridal Bootcamp, which includes a month of treatments and a nutrition plan. The cost is $399 – $549 depending on location. Results from Bridal Bootcamp typically last between 6-8 months after the sessions are done. Body Beautiful Canada’s Eurowave and Countour Wrap were also featured at Blo Blow Dry Bar’s recent Bridal Event, Veil Talk.

bombaybrowbarThe new Bombay Brow Bar in Yaletown brings the traditional Indian hair removal process of threading to the Vancouver scene in a chic, exotic feeling space. Sisters Ravy and Amy, self professed brow obsessives, opened their fuchsia and gold shop in January, offering an alternative to waxing and plucking. The sisters are so obsessed with brow beauty and providing the best threading service to clients that before hiring staff, they used themselves as guinea pigs, having their own brows done by potentials to guage competency and overall experience. The sisters have also taken great care in providing a comfortable and welcoming space; chai is offered upon entrance and the cushy armchairs where clients sit for their service were especially designed for threading. Ravy handles more of the business aspects, having a public relations background, while Amy brings the beauty expertise as an aesthetician.

A relatively pain-free experience, threading involves cotton thread twisted around the fingers and wrapped around individual hairs, pulling them out by the follicle in one smooth motion. It’s a quick process, which minimizes any discomfort. Because the thread isn’t pulling at the skin like waxing, it is a good alternative for those who have sensitive skin. “It glides over the skin, and is definitely reccommended for those with sensitive skin or rosacea, or those who are taking medication that effects the sensitivity of the skin,” says Ravy. Threading is not only for brows and the Brow Bar offers threading for other facial hair, or as they call it, the “fuzzies”.

The Bar offers their space for private brow parties and might make a fun stop on a stagette night. Ravy explains, “Our brow parties are catered to your experience. We reserve the space for you and provide chai or you can bring your own drinks and food. It’s essentially a place where you can have some girly fun.” The space can accommodate up to 15 people comfortably, and there is plenty of room for girls to hang out and gossip, flip through an Indian Vogue and sip chai while waiting their turn for the perfect brow.

And what about shaping brows for the wedding? Ravy suggests coming in two to three months before if a complete reshape is desired or 2-3 days before the big day if a quick cleanup is needed. They also offer a brow service for men, a good idea to include in your hubbie-to-be’s prewedding day grooming if his brows need taming.

Walk-ins are welcome or appointments can be made by calling the Bar (604-683-BROW) or using their online booking service. Bombay Brow Bar is open seven days a week, 10-7 from Monday to Saturday, and 11-5 on Sundays. They are located at 1056 Mainland Street.
