Nestled among the lush, tropical greenery of palm trees, the beachfront boutique villa resort of Etu Moana on Aitutaki in the Cook Islands is an intimate and romantic getaway. This South Pacific resort offers eight modern polynesian style villas with thatched grass roofs, hardwood floors, exposed timbers, and finely crafted teak furniture. Each villa’s large veranda is a quiet and private spot from which you can enjoy a view of the turquoise lagoon and blue ocean beyond.
Owners Jo-Anne and Jim Brittijn opened Etu Moana in 2005. Jo-Anne, a transplanted Canadian, and Jim, originally from Holland, wanted to offer a distinctively relaxed, South Pacific experience for couples, whether they are planning a destination wedding, a honeymoon, or a calming pause from the stresses of everyday life. Beachfront, guests can enjoy lounging on the white sand beach or snorkelling in a lagoon abundant with brightly coloured fish. After taking a dip in the pool, guests can help themselves at the poolside honesty bar, mix yourself up a cocktail whenever you need refreshment. Tropical breakfasts are included, while for other meals, you can venture out to one of the tasty dining options on the island or order in.
On our visit to Etu Moana, our poolside chat with Jo-Anne and Jim was relaxing and filled with lively conversation. They are truly hospitable, warm hosts. Along the shoreline, we spied a small canoe-like boat floating past, carrying three young local boys out for an afternoon of fishing. Ahhh, the pleasures of island life!
Etu Moana is located on the Aitutaki atoll in the Cook Islands, a cluster of small South Pacific Islands close to New Zealand and in fact, they share the same currency. (Although there are few coins special to the Cook Islands.) Fly direct to The Cooks from Los Angeles via Air New Zealand. Travel to the Cooks can be arranged through Travel Leisure Consultants in White Rock.
